affordable electric vehicle revolution

BYD’s newest entry-level electric vehicle, the Atto 1, has shattered the price floor for modern EVs with its approximately $12,000 starting price tag revealed at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show. The Chinese automaker continues its aggressive strategy of democratizing electric mobility, with the long-range variant priced at just $14,500 (IDR235 million), positioning the five-door hatchback to compete directly with traditional internal combustion engine city cars.

The Atto 1 delivers practical urban performance from its front-mounted 55 kW (75 hp) electric motor, generating around 135 Nm of torque. While the 130 km/h (80 mph) top speed won’t impress highway warriors, the sub-five-second 0-30 mph acceleration provides the zippy response city drivers expect. Built on BYD’s e-Platform 3.0 architecture, the Atto 1 benefits from the company’s vertically integrated manufacturing approach. The Atto 1 is actually a repackaged Seagull model that has already proven successful in the Chinese market.

Built for the urban jungle, the Atto 1’s modest 75 hp motor delivers nimble city acceleration with efficiency trumping highway performance.

Battery options reveal BYD’s cost-cutting prowess without sacrificing usability. The standard 30.08 kWh Blade LFP battery delivers 300 km (186 miles) of NEDC range, while the long-range 38.88 kWh pack extends this to 380 km (236 miles). This compact electric vehicle aims to make EVs more accessible to first-time buyers and students living in urban environments. DC fast charging capabilities reach 30 kW for the standard trim and 40 kW for the Premium variant, complemented by 6.6 kW AC charging. Like most electric vehicles, the Atto 1 may experience reduced battery range in cold weather conditions, something potential buyers should consider.

Inside, the Atto 1 balances economy with contemporary tech essentials. A 7-inch digital instrument cluster pairs with a 10.1-inch touchscreen offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Keyless entry, automatic LED headlights, and NFC digital key support come standard, making the package remarkably complete for the price point.

BYD’s safe, cost-effective Blade Cell LFP battery technology forms the cornerstone of this value proposition. Standard vehicle-to-load functionality allows owners to power external devices, adding practical utility.

The Atto 1’s introduction marks another milestone in BYD’s global expansion strategy, leveraging its battery expertise and manufacturing scale to deliver electric mobility at price points previously thought impossible. For markets struggling with EV adoption due to cost barriers, the Atto 1 represents a potential tipping point toward mainstream electrification.
