Alpine’s latest foray into electric motorsport has arrived with the revelation of the A290, a purpose-built rally machine set to make waves in the FIA Ecorally Cup. The competition-focused variant delivers impressive specifications, boasting a 215-220 hp (160 kW) electric motor that produces up to 300 Nm of torque, powered by a substantial 50-52 kWh battery operating at 400 V DC.
The A290’s drivetrain utilizes a specially developed reduction gearbox featuring a ZF-type self-locking limited-slip differential, essential for maintaining traction across varying rally surfaces. This powertrain sits within a chassis built around an FIA-compliant welded roll cage, complemented by Sabelt racing seats and a competition-grade suspension system combining McPherson struts and multi-link rear architecture. Like Formula E cars, the A290 incorporates regenerative braking technology to recover energy during deceleration.
Stopping power comes courtesy of an impressive braking package: monoblock 6-piston calipers clamp 350 mm discs up front, while single-piston units manage 280 mm rotors at the rear. The inclusion of a hydraulic handbrake will please rally purists looking for precise control through tight sections. The vehicle will make its dynamic debut at the prestigious Goodwood Festival of Speed from July 10-13, 2025.
Measuring 3,997 mm long, 1,823 mm wide, and standing 1,502 mm tall, the A290 rides on 8×18-inch EVO Corse wheels wrapped in specially selected Michelin Pilot Sport A tires. The aesthetic treatment maintains Alpine’s iconic identity with a matte black hood and roof, accented by the marque’s signature blue, white, and red color scheme.
The A290’s compact dimensions and classic Alpine livery honor heritage while its race-spec wheels and tires signal serious competitive intent.
The A290 will make its competitive debut in France in 2025, with Alpine aiming to establish a dedicated single-make series by 2026. This push democratizes electric rallying while advancing carbon-neutral motorsport goals. Rally teams can acquire the race-ready package for €59,990 (excluding VAT). The vehicle features an innovative sound system that adjusts based on the car’s speed and throttle position, enhancing the driver experience.
What impresses most is Alpine’s thorough approach to the A290’s development. The integration of motorsport-specific ABS calibration, rally-tuned dampers, and even an innovative electronic sound generator demonstrates thoughtful engineering.
Based on the Renault 5 platform, the A290 modernizes a storied rally lineage while blazing a trail for sustainable competition.
